New Perspective on Ann Arbor and SEO

New York City

New York City

Note from Andrew: Steph is due back in Ann Arbor this week. I already have a special project for her to work on. In the meantime, try not to envy her NYC vacation too much.

Since last Saturday, my family and I have been touring New York City. So far, we’ve been to Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Times Square, SoHo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Grand Central Terminal, Chinatown, and MoMA. Needless to say, it’s been a lot of fun.

Although I’ve really enjoyed spending almost a month in the beautiful state of New York, I’m happy to be going home. Tuesday was my last day in New York City, and I’ll be back in Ann Arbor by Wednesday night (after an approximately twelve hour drive…Dad’s driving, so I get to sleep).

I can’t wait to really start working at Your Search Advisor, especially since I haven’t been able to do too much since I’ve been out of town so much. I want to start applying what I’ve learned about SEO, HTML coding, and business in general. Once I get back, Andrew is going to start me on a new project, and I’m really excited to find out what that’s all about. I’ll keep you posted!

Steph Stalks Google’s Ann Arbor Staff

Note from Andrew: Steph is learning a lot during her internship. She filed this report from a recent visit to Google’s Ann Arbor office to learn about pay per click advertising:

A few days ago, I had the privilege of doing a job shadow at the Google AdWords headquarters in Ann Arbor. The experience and the people I talked to at Google really reinforced what I have been learning at Your Search Advisor.

One of the people I job shadowed was an optimization specialist. She stressed the importance of having specific, relevant keywords. For example, if you’re selling baked goods in Ann Arbor, you may be tempted to choose “happiness” as one of your keywords, since your cupcakes bring others joy. However, the Google search engine would not find your ad very relevant to people typing in “happiness.” You would do much better if you choose something like “Cupcakes in Ann Arbor.”

Something else I found interesting was the formula that Google used to rank its AdWords ads on a search page. Although bidding high amounts and paying more money can help, the quality of the ad and of the website is also extremely important. For example, a company can pay a lot for an ad, but if it is irrelevant or if the website it links to is poorly designed, that ad wouldn’t rank as high as a better quality (though less expensive) ad.

Near the end of the job shadow, I was given a link to a video on YouTube that is very good at explaining how Google ranks its ads. I’d like to share it with you:

Enjoy!

Ann Arbor Art Fair

The annual Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair is gearing up. A lot of the activity takes place right outside the front door of my office. It’s fun to watch all the people moving about and the nice weather makes it a pleasant day to be out and about.

I’ve started a “time lapse” photo post on the Brickyard website to capture a few days of the madness at regular intervals (2-3 hours). Today is vendor set-up day and the crowds arrive tomorrow. You can see today’s photos here, or click on the picture below to view the full post.

Stephanie, everybody. Everybody, Stephanie.

Editor’s Note: This post is the first of a series written by Stephanie Chueh, summer intern extraordinaire. Don’t let her modesty fool you, she is extremely smart and I am looking forward to having her on the team! She will be writing a weekly post about her experiences learning SEM and internet marketing. Welcome Stephanie!

Stephanie Chueh

Hi! My name is Stephanie Chueh, and I’m a high school student at Community High School. In college, I’m going to double major in marketing and engineering. I love writing, watching movies, math, finding out about new things, perusing Fortune magazine, and reading in general. This summer, I am going to start interning at Your Search Advisor, and I can’t wait to get started.

I am very interested in having a career in marketing, and these days, internet marketing has become a much more important component of every company’s marketing strategy. At this internship, I anticipate getting to know more about search engine optimization, networking, marketing strategies, advertising potential with social media such as Facebook, and other exciting things happening in the internet and media worlds.

I will be learning a lot in the coming weeks, and I’m really looking forward to sharing what I learn with you!

Thoughts on the Future of SEO

This nugget was excerpted from an email exchange with a friend. I’ve often thought this but never put the words on paper (or pixels) until now. I thought it was worth sharing:

When I look 5-10 years ahead in SEO, choosing quantity over quality is a move in the wrong direction, if you ask me. There are going to be more competitors and more search-friendly platforms for websites. Basic crawler accessibility will be web dev 101. The truly successful SEO will approach search from marketing perspective, not the other way around.

That’s why it’s called Search Engine Marketing.

Penny for your thoughts? Literally. Stop by the Brickyard. I’ve got a mug full of ‘em.
