John Battelle is a smart man. Instead of focusing on the micro-level changes in the search industry, he thinks big. His book The Search is one of the foremost books about Google and the rise of search engines as an integral part of everyday life.

His original premise is that Google represents The Database of Intentions:

The aggregate results of every search ever entered, every result list ever tendered, and every path taken as a result.

It’s a big idea with huge ramifications, but pales in comparison to the revised 2010 Database of Intentions:

  • The Query
  • The Social Graph
  • The Status Update
  • The Check-In
Database of Intentions

Revised Database of Intentions

Read the original post and spend a few minutes thinking about the implications for your business. It’s sure to spark some interesting conversations and thought in the coming weeks, months and years.

I am looking forward to hearing John expand upon these ideas. Big thoughts like this are why I love my job.
