Update 5.10.09: deleted the “WordCamp Announcement” post and replaced with an event recap

My SEO Presentation

The first annual WordCamp RVA conference was a great success! All 75 or so tickets were sold out 2 months in advance, marketed solely through Twitter and word of mouth. There were a few no-shows, but all in all the crowd was very engaged and there was a high level of interaction with the speakers and other attendees. Here are photos tagged “wcrva” on Flickr.

Matt Walters did a fantastic job coordinating the event and sharing his vast knowledge of WordPress. His insights into using it as a CMS were invaluable as I prepare for my own site redesign on top of the WP platform. Read his recap and check out his site if you ever need a WordPress developer in Richmond.

Chris Gatewood was gracious enough to open up the Hirschler Fleischer meeting space for the crowd and also delivered a very helpful and interesting presentation on the legal implications of blogging. His approach answered the question “What Am I Allowed to Do and Say” as a blogger? He obviously has a deep working knowledge of the legal and technical audiences and is able to bridge the gap between the two.

My Presentation Slides

I had the 4:00 pm time slot, right when people were getting sleepy and fidgety. That was fine with me, as I was able to shorten my talk considerably. I left out a few examples and talking points that I intended to illustrate my intentionally vague slides. So if you missed anything or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I am already looking forward to next year! I have no doubt that we will be able to double the number of attendees and include even more speakers. Keep an eye on the @WordCampRVA twitter account or the WordCampRVA.org for more info.
